An Inspiration: William Heath Robinson

William Heath Robinson’s illustration’s imagine impractical and sometimes impossible, but always eccentric mechanical responses to domestic conundrums or activity. And working during World War II he produced comical, morale-lifting responses to warfare.

In his works we see machines made from rope, cogs, springs, magnets, weights and wheels. They are used to catch clams, test artificial teeth and unconventionally change the time on Big Ben. The attention to detail in his work makes the inventions he suggests clank into action with ease in the mind. Friday, 15 July 2011
