Rob Dunne, Non-Event # 77 : Sparrow Installation view.
Last week I made a trip to London to catch unfinished business at Waterside Project Space; a group show featuring ‘unattributed triumphs, non-events, bleak outlooks and empty poetry’. Finding the underground exhibition space in a warehouse in Islington almost proved as anti-climactic as the press release claims of the exhibition.
Whilst the majority of the works consisted of ‘aesthetic and semiotic gestures’, pointers or starting points (not to their discredit), Rob Dunne’s contribution was disturbingly arresting. Non-Event # 77 : Sparrow (pictured) was a two-channel video piece where we witness the apparent destruction of a fertilised sparrows egg, which, we have to assume, has been stolen from the nest displayed on the top monitor.
This exhibition was in welcome contrast to the more sensational, punch-line works on show at The Saatchi Gallery that afternoon and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the process of making up their own endings.
unfinished business at Waterside Project Space runs until 4 March 2010
